WHAT WE LOOK FOR IN OUR NURSES

At UCI Health, we seek nurses who are not only clinically excellent but also deeply committed to compassionate, evidence-based care. We value individuals who:

  • Align with our mission to discover, teach, and heal
  • Bring curiosity, innovation, and a passion for lifelong learning and professional growth
  • Embrace teamwork, integrity, and patient-centeredness
  • Seek to make a meaningful impact
  • Contribute to a culture of safety and high reliability

Across our system – including our community network hospitals and our ambulatory locations – nurses play a vital role in delivering high-quality, coordinated care to diverse patient populations.

WHY NURSES SHOULD CHOOSE TO WORK AT UCI HEALTH

UCI Health offers nurses the opportunity to work at the forefront of academic medicine while also serving in community settings where personal connection and continuity of care are central. Nurses choose UCI Health because:

  • We are Orange County’s only academic health system, anchored by a Magnet-designated academic medical center and a growing network of community hospitals
  • We offer the best of both worlds: innovative technology, research, and innovation, paired with the close-knit culture of our community facilities
  • Our shared governance and nursing leadership structures support nurses across all sites
  • We prioritize nurse well-being, growth, and recognition in every care setting
  • Our system-wide commitment to professional practice allows nurses to influence care locally and drive improvement regionally

Throughout UCI Health, our nurses are valued, supported, and empowered.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH IN NURSING AT UCI HEALTH

Growth and development are core to the UCI Health nursing experience – at every site and every stage of a nurse’s career. Opportunities include:

  • A structured Nurse Residency Program that supports new graduates in both academic and community hospital settings
  • Clinical advancement programs and specialty training for medical-surgical, critical care, perioperative, and ambulatory roles across the system
  • System-wide mentorship and leadership pathways, including roles in education, quality, and management
  • Tuition assistance, certification support, and research opportunities tailored to individual career goals
  • Opportunities to move across sites and specialties, allowing for diverse clinical experience and long-term career mobility within the health system

Whether at the bedside, in leadership or in advanced practice, nurses at UCI Health are empowered to grow and lead.

OUR PHILOSOPHY ON HIRING NEW NURSES (LESS THAN 6 MONTHS EXPERIENCE)

We believe new nurses are essential to the future of nursing at UCI Health – and we are committed to supporting their success. Our approach includes:

  • Dedicated onboarding and training programs at all UCI Health sites
  • A Nurse Residency Program that emphasizes clinical competence, resilience, and professional identity
  • Structured mentorship and preceptorship to ensure every new nurse is supported and prepared to thrive
  • A culture of inclusion and teamwork where new nurses feel valued, respected, and engaged
  • Opportunities to begin a career in a variety of settings – whether in a high-acuity tertiary environment or a community hospital that fosters continuity and connection

The following is some additional information that you may find helpful as a new graduate nurse applying to UCI Health.

  • New graduate nurses refer to externally hired nursing graduates who have recently obtained a BSN and have less than six months experience working as an RN.
  • An internal employee who graduates with an ADN would also be able to apply to a new graduate RN position provided they do not have six months working as an RN.
  • New graduate nurses are most often hired into in-patient settings.
  • New graduate nurse hiring is often done in cohorts, beginning around March and September.
  • Departments may opt to hire new graduate nurses depending on their mix of experienced nurses and capacity to onboard new graduates, which means the opportunities by department can change from cohort to cohort.

We see every new nurse as a future leader, and we invest accordingly – across all care environments.
